In order to improve the management of Jamaica’s water resources, the Permits and Licenses Unit in the second year of its operations continued its thrust towards regularization of unlicensed abstraction and preparation of the register of permits and licenses. Prior to 1996, licenses were granted to drill and abstract water. These licenses had no expiration periods attached. However, with the passage of the Water Resources Act, separate licenses are valid for five (5) years. The first batch of licenses granted in 1996 was due for renewal in 2001/2002. To date fifteen (15) such renewals have been applied for and approved. The Permits and Licenses Unit also has assigned responsibility of the tele-logging equipment (down the hole video camera). A diagnostic tool, the tele-logging equipment is used to evaluate the conditions of wells and make reconditions for rehabilitation.
