Another warning has come from the Water Resources Authority about the need to improve water collection and storage practices in order to avoid the negative effects of droughts.
Peter Clarke, Managing Director of the Authority, said plans have to be made for the next few years by government and private sector entities to deal with problems on the horizon.
The issue of water supply and drought has been a long standing one in Jamaica.
The Water Resources Authority has in the past recommended that a way be found to move water from northern parishes to the southern side of the island, where there is a continuous drought issue.
Mr. Clarke has suggested that based on research and global trends, more urgency is needed to secure more water.
“That is why steps have to be taken at this stage and plans have to be made…The major utility company will have to plan to have more time within their structure so that they can shift water from Ocho Rios to Port Maria to Negril, whatever it is,” he said.
He was speaking Thursday on RJR’s Beyond The Headlines.
